| Key transport priorities are: |
Improving pedestrian routes to provide better linkage to existing town centre shops, bus and rail stations and local residential areas. |
| |
Ensuring good traffic flow. A new traffic junction is being designed to provide direct and convenient access to the car park, improving access in both directions. |
| |
Minimising pedestrian / vehicle conflict. Wind Street and the new shopping street will be fully pedestrianised. The lower part of Water Street will remain open to traffic to provide vehicle access to the Civic Centre, adjoining houses and service access, but there will not be a through route and other traffic will be discouraged. There wil be a traffic light controlled crossing on Prince of Wales Drive. |
| |
Service yards are located at the rear of retail units and will be screened from the public. |
| Further information Extensive traffic surveys have been undertaken to establish car park useage and traffic flows at junctions around the town centre. This work will help to ensure that designs work well and meet the needs of both the new development and existing shopping areas. |
