IDENTITY
The new Heritage Centre is an opportunity to make an iconic architectural statement that people will associate with Neath
spacer
3D visual spacer The Heritage Centre, including a new library, is set in a public square near the Civic Centre and the new multi-storey car park.

An iconic form is proposed for this building, something that will put Neath on the map.The view of this exciting new building, with the Civic Centre in the background, will create an image that people will immediately be able to associate with Neath, in the same way iconic buildings are associated with Cardiff and Birmingham.

Heritage Centre design rationale
spacer
The shape was inspired by the natural curve of the hills which surround the town, and the organic form was conceived to represent a nugget of mined coal, or Welsh gold. Some have also said that there is a passing resemblance to a rugby ball.
spacer
It is envisaged that the upper portions would be clad in metallic shingles made of alloy copper aluminium. This will provide a cost effective ‘gold’ colour, which will dull to a deeper orange over time.
spacer
At night time the slits and end windows to the library will glow and provide glimpses into the timber clad interior.

Further information As designs progress on the other buildings, the aim will be to create a high quality and contemporary environment that is sympathetic to the character of Neath whilst also being bold and exciting. Visual relationships to adjoining buildings and enhancing the setting of the adjoining Conservation Area are key priorities.
